Purpose
South Africa is crying out for changechange - for safety, for dignity, for community. Everyday, Women, girls and children face the threat of violence, fear and trauma. We cannot wait for "one day". Today is the day to stand united and create a safer, more just future for everyone in our nation.
Who we are
Who We Are & Why We Exist
Brightwood Academy is more than a school — it is a movement.
A movement born out of a deep conviction: every human being deserves to live free from fear, free from violence, and free to thrive.
While our physical campus is still under development, our impact has already begun through urgent national work aimed at stopping gender-based violence (GBV), supporting survivors, and educating communities.
We believe South Africa must become a place where every child, every woman, every family — no matter their background — can feel safe, respected, and protected. Real change begins not with buildings, but with courage, compassion, and collective action.
The Urgency of the Moment
The Urgency of the Moment — GBV in South Africa
South Africa bears one of the highest rates of gender-based violence in the world.
An estimated 1 in 3 South African women will experience physical violence
A woman is killed every three hours due to gender-based violence.
Children experience bullying and emotional trauma at alarming rates harming their development, sense of safety, and future potential.
These are not just statistics — they are daughters, sisters, friends, and neighbours. They are the foundation of our communities being broken, unless we act.
South Africa is calling us to come together — to make it a place where everyone feels safe, protected, and valued.
Action Now
Action Now — The Brightwood National GBV & Anti-Bullying Outreach Program
At Brightwood, safety cannot wait for construction. Change cannot wait for schedules. Children cannot wait.
The Brightwood National GBV & Anti-Bullying Outreach Program is a direct, urgent response to the trauma, fear, and violence affecting families across the country. Through this program we:
Prevention — Stop violence before it begins
We travel into communities, youth spaces, and schools to teach:
✔ Consent and healthy boundaries
✔ Respectful relationships
✔ Emotional awareness
✔ Recognising early warning signs of abuse
Our prevention work includes:
Community workshops
School talks
Youth mentorship sessions
Parent and caregiver training
These equip people with the confidence and tools to protect themselves and others.
Protection
Protection — Support those at risk
When someone is in danger, they need help now, not later.
Through the programme we provide:
✔ Safe reporting channels
✔ Emergency support and referrals
✔ Pathways to shelters, medicalcare, legal help, and counselling.
We help survivors navigate the systems that should protect them — and often don’t — with respect, dignity, and care.
Innovation With Care
To create a safer future for learners, we aim to partner with skilled app developers to build a high-impact personal safety platform for South Africans.
The Brightwood GBV & Anti-Bullying Safety App Initiative
Violence often happens in moments when someone feels alone, afraid, and unable to reach help. The Brightwood Safety App is being developed to place immediate support, protection, and guidance directly into the hands of those who need it most — especially women, children, and young people at risk.
We are working toward partnering with skilled developers to build a simple, secure, life-saving digital safety tool for South Africans. This is not just an app — it is a portable safety system designed for real emergencies and everyday protection.
How the App Will Protect Lives
Anonymous Reporting – Allow users to safely report abuse, bullying, or threats without fear of exposure.
One-Touch Emergency Help – A panic SOS button that instantly alerts trusted contacts and shares live location in a crisis.
Encrypted Evidence Storage – Securely store photos, voice notes, or messages that may be needed later as proof.
Safe Route Guidance – Directions to nearby police stations, clinics, shelters, and safe spaces.
Quick Escape Screen –Instantly hides the app if a user is in danger and someone is watching.
Counsellor & Support Chat Access – Direct links to emotional support and guidance services.
Child-Friendly Safety Tools – Age-appropriate features to help children report bullying or unsafe situations.
Community Alerts – Notify users of nearby risks or safety concerns in their area.
